Madison WI will host a philanthropic talk by Robbie Bach, former President of Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division, in charge of Xbox. He’s preaching the gospel of becoming a civic engineer by engaging in the community. He’s written a book called “Xbox Revisited” and explains how lessons from his Xbox experience can help social issues we face online.
He was recently interviewed and asked the following question:
What kinds of career paths do you think are the most promising for young people?
He also talks about gender imbalance in STEM and career paths.
Two roles that I see in large demand in IT include “Business Analyst” and “Project Manager”. They require strong abilities with softer skills like communication, documentation and organization that are critical to the success of IT organizations.

- Computer Science and engineering. But he also discusses demand for strong designers in both software and hardware. Designers are essential team members. Designers can be artistic types that study industrial design.
- Big Data! As we progress in areas of big data and software as a service (SaaS) i.e “cloud applications”, these skills will be in high demand.
- Gathering big data doesn’t mean much unless deep analytical research is performed.
He also talks about gender imbalance in STEM and career paths.
- It’s important for women to understand that excelling in STEM doesn’t pigeonhole them into programming or engineering.
- STEM skills are valuable in a variety of careers: healthcare, business management, teaching, research and marketing.
