- In 2010 there were 267 undergrad computer science majors. In the fall of 2014 that number was 909!
- Nationally computer science enrollments are rising fast. In 2013 there was a 12.4% increase in undergrad enrollment
There are two reasons for this change:
- Students and parents are aware of the ample and lucrative career prospects with advanced computer skills
- Universities are making computer science available to a greater variety of students
At CU Boulder they have a new bachelor's degree in Computer Science for students in the Liberal Arts as well as Science/Engineering majors. Before 2013, students had to be admitted to the Engineering college to major in the field. When the BA program was introduced they expected 50 students to sign-up and 450 took the introductory course!
In Part two of my blogpost, I'll explain the economic forces that are causing this sea change.
